    IWAN 2002

    Fourth Annual International Working Conference on Active Networks
    December 4-6, 2002, at ETH Zuerich, Switzerland

    CALL FOR PAPERS

    SCOPE:
    Active networks aim at providing easy introduction of new
    network services by adding dynamic programmability to network devices
    such as routers and switches. While in the early days of research
    in this area the focus was on the basic mechanisms needed for
    moving and installing code in the network, research now has shifted
    towards the real benefits active network technology may provide:
    Network programmability and service deployment architectures bringing
    just the right services to the customer at just the right time and
    location. It is obvious that with the accelerating trend towards
    mobility, ad-hoc networks, and content-aware distribution, active and
    programmable networks will play an important role in future network
    architectures. At IWAN 2002 we aim at bringing together members
    of the various communities using active and related techniques,
    and provide a forum for discussion and collaboration, involving
    researchers, developers, service providers and potential users. We
    encourage the submission of papers that cover the application of
    active techniques to all aspects of network based communication,
    including active transport, active services and service deployment,
    active terminals and active management. In addition, the meeting
    will have a focus on relating customer needs and customer oriented
    services to active techniques. It is expected that most submissions
    will include proofs of concept and/or quantitative results, however,
    we will welcome high quality descriptive contributions, where the
    ideas are particularly novel, or where the concepts introduced are
    likely to influence the work of other groups. Authors are invited to
    submit papers addressing, but not limited to, the following topics:

    * Architectures and new concepts for active networks,
      systems and environments
    * Applications for active networks, systems and environments
    * Active services
    * Hardware and software platforms for the implementation
      of active network protocols
    * Programmable network elements
    * Network processor platforms for active networks
    * Programmable devices (incl. PDAs, soft radio, etc)
    * Security in active networks and systems
    * Mobility in active networks and systems
    * Active networks in ad-hoc networking
    * Content-aware distribution using active networks
    * Service creation, deployment, and management
    * Design and development methodologies for active services
    * Implementation of active network infrastructures
    * Experiences and evaluation results
    * Standardization of active networks

    INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS:
    Submissions should describe original work (not submitted or
    published elsewhere) and be 20 double-spaced pages (5,000 words)
    or less in length. Submissions should include: title, authors,
    affiliations, 150 word abstract, and list of keywords. Identify the
    author responsible for correspondence, including the author's name,
    position, mailing address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail
    address. The proceedings of the conference will be published by
    Springer-Verlag Heidelberg in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science
    (LNCS) Series.

    PROPOSALS FOR TUTORIALS:
    IWAN 2002 will organize full-day or half-day tutorials covering any
    aspect of active and programmable networks. Proposals should be sent
    to the submission address and must include an extended abstract
    (2-4 pages) containing a description of the topic and intended
    audience, a biography of the speaker(s), and an indication of length
    (half or full day). Individuals interested in submitting tutorial
    proposals are encouraged to contact one of the PC Co-Chairs before
    the deadline to discuss the proposed content.

    PROPOSALS FOR PANELS AND DISCUSSION SESSIONS:
    It is planned to organize one or more panels discussing hot issues
    in the area of active networks. Prospective panel organizers are
    invited to submit a proposal with a short description of the panel
    theme and potential panelists.

    ADDRESS FOR SUBMISSION:
    Authors are requested to submit their manuscripts electronically in
    PDF or Postscript format or as a Microsoft Word document using the
    following address: http://www.iwan2002.org/register.html GENERAL
    INFORMATION: For more information and contact addresses please
    visit the web site at: http://www.iwan2002.org

    PUBLISHING INFORMATION:
    The proceedings of this conference will be recorded under the
    series name "Lecture Notes in Computer Science". For more technical
    information for authors regarding manuscript preparation refer to the
    authors instructions sub-page, as well as the editors sub-page on the
    LNCS Home Page. Note that LNCS now also is published, in parallel
    to the printed books, in full-text electronic version and that we
    therefore the publishers will need, besides the printed papers,
    the electronic files of all parts of the manuscript (including
    front matter pages).

    IMPORTANT DEADLINES:
    * May 31, 2002: Papers, tutorials and panel proposals due
    * August 21, 2002: Authors notified of acceptance
    * September 12, 2002: Camera-ready papers due
